YCN Collaboration

Today I spoke to a third year Graphic Design student about collaborating on the YCN Art Fund Brief.

She put together this inspiration board on the types of images she was considering, and we talked about potential themes.

I was wanting to try working more with figures in my work, and these styles definitely fit with my usual work, so I'm excited to get started.

The themes the Graphic Design student identified were:
-Having a break from laptops
-Free date
-Flat outing
-History/culture
-See the world without needed a plane
-Something to share
-Documenting work

We decided on around 6 illustrations, which would be fairly abstract characters, with text adding context

ARTIST RESEARCH- Quentin Monge

Mini gouache painting:

WHAT DO I LIKE?
- The fluid overlap of shapes makes a really dynamic, flowing composition
- The colour contrast creates one really bold line of movement across the image
- Small scale creates a really attractive design and adds intrigue to the piece
- Cropping and white bleed into the the image from the frame makes the audience use their interaction to fill in the gaps

HOW HAS THIS INFLUENCED ME?
- The simplistic forms of people would be something I would love to practice and use in my work
- Considering scale, I would like to experiment with making something more tangible and regarded as an item
- Delicate overlapping of shapes could be something I look into with print over lay
- Pastel tones contrast with the black to add a strong presence on the page
