Responsive- Illustration 12" Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds development

INTENT:
- I wanted to create something very reflective of the name 'rings of saturn' and immediately I thought of this mashup of different oddly shaped circles to make something perfect
- The main thing I wanted to communicate was the simplicity but also the complexity of these shapes associated with the song

HOW:
- I cut circles out of card, and ensured they were all exactly the same by layering them on top of each other
- I wanted to see how I could play around digitally to create interesting compositions and outcomes from the basic shapes
- I thought about using transparency and texture to give a more dynamic rough look, but I don't think it worked too well

WHY:
- In order to explore the versatility of these simple shapes I trialled some compositions I hadn't thought of before
- I wanted to produce quick, potential outcomes, but I really struggled working in this digital way

REFLECTIONS:
- I decided to work more hands on, as I hit a wall working digitally from scratch
- I should have roughed more before starting on the computer

Digital mock up including overlay

Hands on:

HOW:
- I experimented with several loose compositions, recording them with photos on my phone, to get an idea of how I wanted to manipulate the circles
- It was liberating to quickly explore my ideas in an almost 3D manner
- I then scanned in my favourite composition to use as a final
Trying different compositions physically

WHY:
- I found it so much more natural to work hands on rather than digital
- I came up with far more loose outcomes this way rather than focusing on lining everything up perfectly on the computer

REFLECTIONS:
- Although my final outcome is fairly ordered, it's still a lot looser and less precise than if I had composed it digitally, which I think suits my intent for this piece
- I really enjoyed experimenting with different layouts and see what different outcomes I could get from the exact same shapes
- It was really interesting to see the negative space shapes, and how the different angles reacted to create new shapes
