Group tutorials

Today Ailsa, who is currently studying an MA in Illustration in Edinburgh visited the studio in order to help us with our projects.
In a group of five people we gave feedback to one another, which I really enjoyed as I hadn't seen many people's work outside of my table group.
I also found the responses of my group very helpful, as I got recommendations of artists to look at and ways to develop my practice.

What is working?
- SIMPLE IS OK- don't worry that the idea is too simple, that's what makes it work
- Mix of texture and flat
- Idea of playing with scale
- Maybe add concept of her putting down bag at the start and picking up at the end to develop a bit more narrative?
- Humorous idea

What isn't working?
- Don't over complicate- get rid of ideas of adding clothes tags or even texts
- Ensure each image is different and don't make them too simple- inject humour this way
- Remember to look at other practitioners

Plan of action:
- Take photos of fabrics from Market
- Research Phillipa Rice
- Develop story board

After looking at the work of Phillipa Rice, I was struck by how similar our character design was, with the short dark hair, rosy cheeks and simple features. I really like how she conveys movement in her images and I will definitely keep this in mind when I am exploring my imagery.
I also like how she uses repeated but slightly different imagery mixed with textures and block colour in her work, which is something I really want to push in this project.
In addition, I really admire how she has used slight additions of hand rendered type, and although we decided that text would only add unnecessary complications to my work, I'll keep this style in mind for my cover.
